The little table by my dining room window
Back in December when I visited family and friends in Canada, my mother said, "Jeanette, I have something that I thought you might like to have." She took me up to her room and took a box out of her closet. It looked like she might have had quite a few things in it at one time, but now it was nearly empty. She took a little roll of fabric out of the bottom and shook it out for me to see. It was a doily!
I love to crochet, and many years ago when I was first married I used to always have my crochet bag nearby so that I could work on my current project. I've made all kinds of things from afghans to potholders to fancy doilies to little animals that fasten over a button on a child's clothing.
This particular doily is one that I made for my mother probably at least 25 years ago and which she had used on her little table when she was living in Liberia.I found it in one of the pictures in my album, and she used it like this with some of those orange lilies that grew around "The Circle." (Picture of the Day from 05/14/2008). Since my mother can no longer use it, I am so pleased that she thought of giving it back to me! It feels like I made my own heirloom!

The grey table and the settee! My goodness!
First off, this post made me teary because of the verse on the little pot on your table. I have done this day on that verse! I woke with it on my mind this morning and was recalling it all the way home tonight. And now there it is on your blog!
Then I scrolled down and saw the grey table and the settee! And yes, Mama's box is nearly empty. It makes me sad. When she gives away the last item ...
What a wonderful gift ... from you to your Mom and then back to you again. I too crochet, but not as much as I used to. I've made doilies, afghans, pillows, one tablecloth (took me almost 2 years) and a twin size bed spread (another 2 yr project). I'm teaching myself to knit now.
What a beautiful doily! Now, it will be cherished for so many reasons . . .
The gray table and the settee...I know! They go as far back as time itself, it seems!
I love the verse on that little pot, too, and often live by it just like you, C-A! We must have been living our day in unison yesterday! That is actually a candle holder. It holds a little tea-light candle with a lid to put over the candle. I found it on the reduced shelf at Hallmark and loved it right away. (Of course, bargain queen loved the price, too!)
Wow, Louise! You have been a busy crocheter for sure! I have never been brave enough to do such big projects. Maybe I'm not patient enough. I hope you are enjoying the knitting. My mom and Carol-Ann knit and I've done it a little, but for me it is such a daunting task to fix errors. With crocheting, you can go back one little loop at a time until you get to the error, but with knitting it always seems so difficult to get all those loops back onto the needles. (I have a feeling this IS really a patience issue!)
You are right Renae! I hope that I will be able to hand it on someday to someone who will cherish it too.
