Jeanette, Gord, and Carol-Ann
I'm not sure of the date on this (approximately 1975), taken in Liberia.
Carol-Ann and I often dressed like this in a top and lappa, which is a piece of material cut the full width of a bolt of 36-inch fabric, thus it has a finished edge at the hem and waist. It is wrapped around and tucked in or fastened at the waist to form a long skirt.

Beautiful girls, beautiful skirts!
Thanks Renae!
Hey there JJ,
I just had to explain to Kinza that, "No, dear, Uncle Gordie was not an anorexic beanpole!" He was simply a walking laboratory wonder! All that swimming next to the crocs and schistosomiasis parasites (to say nothing about little bitty things causing amebic dysentery and filaria breeding nematode worms) caused his blood and urine samples to raise eyebrows at the Missionary Health Institute in North York!
Well, C-A, he probably took after our dad's genes on that skinny thing, too! We would have been appalled to know what was running around inside us, I'm sure! However, I'm reading things in the news about how our overly fastidious society is depriving children of the necessary exposure to certain bugs and invisible creepy-crawlies. It seems some of these are necessary early in life in order for our bodies to develop the strong immune systems needed to later on fight off cancer and other deadly diseases. Our sanitizing wipes may be worse than any germs... I say that should mean we will be able to ward off disease on any continent, as we certainly had plenty of exposure to all kinds of things!! Actually, I find this a fascinating concept and one that makes a lot of sense to me. (Did you have to look up those words, Carol-Ann? I don't even remember seeing "nematode" before!)
Hey, do you like my new blog header picture?? (Maybe I am changing them too often for your taste.) I think I may stick with this one for awhile. Gord sent it to me by email yesterday, and I think it is just beautiful.
I followed you here from Amrita's.
Thought I'd try to find out a little about you.
The first post didn't say much (loved the pics though) so I read on.
I love how you love.
I'm upset with my wife for how she feels about our handicapped children. I wish she could see things a little more as you do.
At any rate... I have a blog, and it is a little private, but if you are interested you may visit. Amrita knows the way... or you can email me at the addres I left for her under your last comment there.
God bless...
Will

Good Morning, JJ
I love your blog pic, by the way!!! Actually, Kinza was with me when we clicked on and both of us did a double-take! Then I remembered it was June 1st! You are so organized!
By the way ...
We were at Charolyn's 60th birthday party yesterday -- it was really nice to see her and her girls. I have seen Celina within the last ten years but I can't remember seeing Cindy since she was very small. All the cousins (except those who have moved to the States-side, ahem) were there. We lined up for pics just to prove it actually happened! Charolyn was a puddle of tears -- it was a surprise noon-dinner at a beautiful restaurant. Your little name came up many times -- your little ears must be warm!
Hi Will! Glad to have you visit! Thanks for your comments. I will check out your blog as soon as I have a chance.
Carol-Ann, thanks for the update on Charolyn's party. It sounds like you had a great time! My ears didn't burn at all, so I had no clue you were talking about me!! I wish I could have been there...
I'm glad you like my new picture. I think it is so beautiful -- quiet and peaceful like I am always hoping to be!
